Brothers from the Northeastern University Associate Chapter of Sigma Beta Fraternity, Inc. volunteered for the YWCA on the MLK Day of Service and Leadership on January 18th. They spent their day with the YWCA located in Back Bay Boston learning about a new ethnic discussions program they wished to implement to women throughout the surrounding Boston communities. Brothers trekked out into the snow and rain and divided and conquered various Boston neighborhoods including Back Bay, Jamaica Plain, South End, Beacon Hill, and Charlestown, handing out informational flyers and posting them in the local businesses and shops. A lot of ground was covered in just a few hours!

SIGMA BETA RHO & KAPPA PHI LAMBDA PRESENT “ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER?”

On Tuesday, November 3rd 2009, the brothers of the Northeastern University Associate Chapter of Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc. hosted Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? with Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority at AfterHours. During the event, student partners were asked a series of questions from elementary school subject groups, including 1st grade math, 2nd grade physical education, 3rd grade geography, and more! Members of Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc. and Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority assisted the contestants as student helpers in which the competing teams could use lifelines in order to “cheat” off them for the correct answer. Prizes were awarded to the top two teams and other items were raffled off at the end of the event.

The event was part of MGC week and set out to raise funds to sponsor impoverished children through the support of Children International. The contributions raised through the event will help pay for the sponsored child’s medical and dental care, educational assistance, durable clothing and shoes, improved living conditions, and much more. The main program asks for $22 dollars a month in order to sponsor one child, and given that small sum our Fraternity has a chance to largely improve the lives of many, many children for an extended period of time.

Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc. would like to thank all the people who came out to participate in the competition and support our cause!

On Wednesday, October 7th 2009, the brothers of the Northeastern University Associate Chapter of Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc. hosted the 1st annual Northeastern College Bowl. Twelve student organizations competed against each other in a free-for-all quiz bowl competition benefiting SOS Children’s Villages.

SOS Children’s Villages is an organization that builds villages across the globe, with the goal of providing a comfortable, family-oriented place to live for orphaned or abandoned children. Children who have been abandoned or orphaned come to SOS Children’s Villages where they are integrated into a loving family environment. They are nurtured and supported by an SOS Mother and up to 15 other children in their SOS home who become their SOS brothers and sisters. Strong bonds develop within these ‘SOS families’, and even after the children are grown and leave the village, these family relationships endure.

The competition was comprised of various rounds of questions ranging anywhere from academics and NEU history to pop culture. There were both individual and team rounds plus bonus rounds such as the popular “Name that Tune” round. Additionally, teams could earn bonus points by making charitable donations to SOS throughout the competition.

Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc. would like to congratulate Kappa Sigma Fraternity on their 1st place victory, Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority for coming in 2nd place, and Phi Delta Chi Fraternity for placing in 3rd place! Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc. would also like to thank UTSAV, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, CUP, Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, Delta Zeta Sorority, Kappa Delta Sorority, Alpha Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Delta Phi Omega Sorority, and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity for participating in the first annual Northeastern College Bowl and for their generous contributions to SOS Children’s Villages!

On Saturday, October 3rd 2009, the brothers of the Northeastern University Associate Chapter of Sigma Beta Rho Fraternity, Inc. participated in their 2nd annual Gandhi day of service in Boston. This is an annual day of service which takes place on the weekend of Gandhi’s birthday. Organized by SAALT, volunteers gathered for a morning reception which explained the significance of the annual event. Brothers were split up into various groups and sent to different service sites around Boston. Some Brothers helped create posters to support an anti-violence movement in addition to creating halloween cards and gift packs for underprivileged children from the surrounding communities. Meanwhile, other Brothers helped sort and bundle books and toys at Cradles and Crayons. Others volunteered at Healthcare for the Homeless and a final group partook in activities at the Harbor Islands.
